retention of old e-mail

I recently installed MS Office 2003 however my old e-mail
which was in my inbox in the previous version of Office
was not transfered, were they deleted?

They shouldn't but depends on how you upgraded whether they still are
linked. Search for pst-files o your harddisk. Make sure you include hidden
and sytem files/folders when searching. When you find one you can connect to
it by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
