Ribbon toolbar disappeared

While Word 2004 (version 11.4.2) was running, I realized one of the toolbars
had disappeared (the one with the increase/decrease font size icons). It does
not appear on the toolbars drop down menu. I quit Word and restarted, but it
is still missing. At the same time, clicking the printer icon on the Standard
Toolbar now bypasses the prompt to choose quality of paper, pages to print,
etc., and goes directly to the printer.

Do you have a thought or suggestion?

MANY thanks.

Hi Patricia,

Do you mean the formatting toolbar that runs across the top, or the
Formatting Palette that is a long vertical thing with lots of different
sets of options? It matters.

Re your print issue--that's always how the Print icon on the toolbar
behaves--it's a QuickPrint button, while cmd-P/File | Print lets you set
options. You can remove the QuickPrint command and put the File | Print
command there instead, if you want, or just not use it, but that's the
default setting, not a new problem on your machine.

I am having the same problem with my MacWord 2008 and my daughter (I believe she has MacWord 2006. One day my toolbar simply disappeared. I can bring it back by clicking view and clicking tool bars. However, I have to click formatting beneath the regular.

Then when I return to the document I have to click on the tool bar and everything is there. I have to do this with each document. This is getting old very quickly.

How do I get it back to the defualt?

im having a similar problem with toolbars in word 2008 (version 12.1.0
and mac os x 10.5.3).

for any given document, the toolbars are different. for example, if i
open 'file1.doc' and adjust the toolbars (ie,
view>toolbars>reviewing), and then open another document (file2.doc),
the toolbars change (ie, the reviewing toolbar disappears).
i guess toolbars preferences are for each individual document and not
for the application itself?

i have tried repairing permissions using disk utility already to no
avail.

G. Miller, I told you to start a NEW thread if you wanted help with
toolbars. You don't have the same problem and adding to this thread is
confusing the issue. Note to others--this answer is specific to the
problem quoted below, not to all posts on this thread.

The reviewing toolbar is special. It doesn't persist, as it's got some
extra mojo that makes it only show when Word thinks it is needed, that
is, when the doc already has comments/track changes, or when track
changes is turned on. (You should complain about this to MS via Help |
Send Feedback, as there have been lots of complaints and we can hope for
a change)

The outlining toolbar works similarly. Other than those two (I think),
toolbar preferences are application-wide and you should not run into
this problem, the same ones should show on all documents.

Ways to handle the reviewing toolbar:

1) move all the functions you want from the reviewing toolbar to another
toolbar that doesn't have the special mojo.

2) move the track changes button to another toolbar, hitting it will
automatically bring up the reviewing toolbar.

Guidelines for doing either one are here:

Try clicking the little tic-tac lozenge in the upper right. That's a
mac-wide setting that will collapse your toolbars. Click it until you
are sure toolbars are visible, and see if that helps.

Once you get one doc set up with the standard and formatting toolbars,
the rest should follow.
