"View" and "insert" menus have disappeared from menu bar

Today when I opened Word documents I was working on, I noticed the "View" menu was gone and later, when I wanted to insert a footnote, I noticed the "Insert" menu was gone. Since I need "View" to customize toolbars and menubars, I'm not sure what to do. I quit Word and restarted my computer and the full menu bar appeared when I clicked the Word icon, but as soon as I selected a document from the project gallery, these options disappeared again.

I have the same problem and have yet to figure out how to access the View menu in another way. I;m on Office 2008 - Mac OSX. Years ago I could go to preferences and throw away the Word preferences file, but I haven't been able to make that work either. Help?

Control/Right-Click a toolbar & access the Customize dialog from the
contextual menu. Select the name of the Menu Bar on the Toolbars & Menus
page then click the Reset button.
