Running Office 2003 and 2007 on a computer

I have installed office 2007 on my computer that already had office 2003
installed (I followed all the custom install instructions and both are
working fine), I would like to know if it is possible to designate 2003 as
the default software to open word, excel, etc. files instead of 2007?

The way I was taught to do that does not seem to be working. Would you
kindly give me instructions?

For Word 2003: Close Word 2007, then open Word 2003. Let the setup run
through until Word opens. Then follow the steps described in
http://pschmid.net/blog/2007/04/20/110 with the only exception that you
have to use 12.0 instead of 11.0.
For the others: is this XP or Vista?

This worked fine for word. But what about Excel 2003?
