Runs virus software on opening the program or a file

Even though I have the Tools/Options/Macro set to 'medium' I very frequently get a message/or border note and major delay (up to a minute!!) in opening the Word 2003 (& excel) program & files saying that virus software is running. This has developed maybe several weeks after installing Norton System Works 2003 upgrade.
(Also, when opening Word or Excel I get a message asking to 'disable add in' and/or disable macros. I think that message is because I haven't upgraded to Acrobat 6.)
