Save As file location ?

This is not Excel specific as all '08 apps do this and I suspect Mac in general does this but whatever document I have open in Word, Excel etc.. when I select to Save As the changed file, the location, in the Save As dialogue box, always reverts to the last saved file location, not the location of the file I just opened. Can this behavior be changed to the opened file's location? It saves having to barrel back to the location of the file that I opened so that I can save a changed version in the same place. Sounds confusing and I bet I would have to show what it is that bugs me.. :)

Thanks

Steve

Yea, this bugs me too.

One suggestion to make things easier.

When you open the file using File/Open, the parent folder is added to
the Recent Places list in the Save As "Where:" dropdown (the folder
dropdown, if you've expanded the dialog to show the file structure).

That makes it a two step process rather than navigating multiple levels.

If your files are all stored in the same folder, you can set the
"Preferred file location" in Preferences/General to that folder.

I do not see a Recent Places folder in the Save As dialog box. Is this something I need to add to Finder Places?

Thanks

Hmm... Don't know.

Here's what I see:

1) If I've collapsed the file structure in the Save As dialog (i.e,
there's a dropdown with the label "Where:", then the dropdown shows
three regions:

File Path to the folder
-------------------------
Favorites (set in Finder)
-------------------------
"Recent Places"

2) If I've expanded the file structure (i.e, clicked the blue triangle
next to the Save As: input box), then in the second level of controls,
there's a folder dropdown which shows the path to folder and Recent
Places

Hi Steve -

A couple of thoughts on the issue...

Although the OS/program's behavior can't be modified ours can :) I've never
incurred the problem because I always do my Save As immediately upon opening
the starting file. I got into the habit of doing that in order to avoid
inadvertently saving to the copy I didn't want to change.

Also, some programs offer an "As a copy" feature when you open the file.
That may also be worth investigating but I can't give any details because I
haven't used it much and am not at a Mac today :-(
