saved document

for some reason, whenever I open a new document in word it pulls up an old
document. the same document opens each time i open the program or have the
program opened and click "new" and "document". i have to "edit", "select
all", "delete" to start with a blank document.

any ideas so that when I open word I will just have a blank document again?
