Say "NO" to Windows Office - Try OpenOffice

Hi,

I know I am off the subject but Windows Office is just soo expensive
to write a letter, view an exell file, view or write a presentation.
In Europe the simple office version to an end-user is € 500 ($600).
The lisence agreement that companies have to pay per user in their
company is way out and companies need to judge, analyse and implent a
cheaper solution.
There's one alternative which makes live cheaper www.openoffice.org.

I downloaded this version and it's just great to use.
It is only when you start using this open-sourced office version, you
see that those MS Office mechanism you aquired throughout the years
are a bit a pain to implement but if you stick to it(like I did), it
will eventually avoid paying those bucks to MS.
No need to pirate it, it's for FREE!!!!!
If you have programming skills, modify it to suit you or your company.


I would like to have your comments, if you have tried to use
openoffice or why you haven't tried it, yet or why do you continue to

While the Microsoft public boards may not be the most apropos area to put in
a plug for OpenOffice it certainly is no troll. I continually recommend and
make it available to many occasional, home and light office users.

The MS renditions remain quite clutzy and over loaded with junk even after
years of work. Using financial leverage to replace innovation and serving
customer needs is the accepted norm.

Over pricing and scant regard for program integrity and security is to be
expected and the reasons are quite clear when dealing with MS. After a few
conversations with their professional support people one wonders what went
wrong.

So while I am forced to use many MS products I am also quite aware of the
laggardly incorporation of the quality design we should be able to expect
from the worlds software leader but probably will never get.

OpenOffice is indeed a very legitament alternative to those who wish not to
buy the MS monsters when a much simpler program will serve their needs. So
in showing consideration for these users it is totally in line to indicate
there are other options available to them.

Free is a good price for a great compromise program.

Um, this is a forum to get assistance with Microsoft Office, not O or
Star Office. If you want to extol their virtues, then post in a place
appropriate to the product being extolled.

This is not one of them.

I use O on my Linux machine (Mandrake 9.x) and find it severely lacking
from my expectations of what an office suite should be. Even my old Lotus
SmartSuite (1999?) does things a LOT better than that program. It has a
LONG way to go for anyone who does more than prepare a simple document or
uses a simple list in a spreadsheet.

And, as I said, the lack of a PIM is a major drawback. Put in a hook to
Evolution (probably not possible now that Novell owns it) and you might
approach 25% of the functionality already existing in Microsoft Office 97.

Um, this is a forum to get assistance with Microsoft Office, not O or
Star Office. If you want to extol their virtues, then post in a place
appropriate to the product being extolled.

This is not one of them.

I use O on my Linux machine (Mandrake 9.x) and find it severely lacking
from my expectations of what an office suite should be. Even my old Lotus
SmartSuite (1999?) does things a LOT better than that program. It has a
LONG way to go for anyone who does more than prepare a simple document or
uses a simple list in a spreadsheet.

And, as I said, the lack of a PIM is a major drawback. Put in a hook to
Evolution (probably not possible now that Novell owns it) and you might
approach 25% of the functionality already existing in Microsoft Office 97.
