Ok, I'll take a shot in the dark:

You can't scan directly to any format. All scanning does is make a picture of the page.
There is software that will try to translate the little black figures into letters. This
is called OCR or Optical Character Recognition. Many scanners come packaged with this kind
of software. The free versions are not usually very satisfactory; you will have to spend
some time editing the results. I can recommend ScanSoft OmniPagePro. Latest version about
$100. This will do a pretty good job of reading the document and will also load it into MS
Word, whence you can save it as RTF.
