Screen turns black

When responding to an email, if I leave the screen for another window, when I
come back, the screen is black and I cannot make out any text. Only started
in the last two weeks, so not sure what changes caused it. If I delete the
border line separating the reply from the original message, the "blackness"
disappears. Any thoughts?
