Scrolling immediately in Word 97

Hello,

When I scroll using the bar downwards in Word 97, instead of scrolling
downwards immediately like notepad and IE, the page number appears.

Is there a way to stop Word 97 from displaying the page number when I scroll
down and just go down immediately?

This works with the vertical scrollbar, but it doesn't seem to affect the
horizontal one. Is there another setting that can change this?

Also, is there a way to force word to always start in "Normal" mode? I set it
to Normal, and when I start a blank new document it appears in Normal. But
when I open an existing document it goes back to Page Layout.

Is it possible to stop this?
