Select function out of control

When I select a section of text larger than shown on the screen, the selection zooms out of control to the end of the document. How can I stop this and select the section I desire - Word 2000

The farther above or below the window border you position the mouse the
faster ther scrolling to include out-of-range content (because you chose
to include it by moving the mouse outside the window while dragging to
tell the application to select more).

And what does a problem in Word have to do with Outlook? Repost in a
Word newsgroup.
