select word without space

The answer is probably No, but is there a way to set the preferences
so that double clicking on a word does not select the space after the
word. I would prefer not to have to drag across the whole word to
select it without the space.

I vaguely recall last seeing the option of including / excluding the space
after a word in Word 5.1a, the last version of Word that wasn't ported from
the PC. A long time ago...

If I frequently wanted to select a word without a following space I would
record a macro that achieved the same thing by deleting the space
immediately after selecting the word(s) or perhaps, alternatively, after
pasting. I'd assign a keyboard shortcut to it. In the first place I'd have
selected the word by double-clicking. Depending on the context, I can see a
few other alternatives too.

Preferences>Edit>Use smart cut and paste>Settings>Automatically adjust word
spacing...

Turn that off.

But you WILL miss it, so remember how to turn it back on again :)

In addition to what John & Clive have suggested here is another technique

Click at one end of the word, then click at the opposite end while holding
the Shift key - no dragging. You can do the same for any size passage..
Beats the pants off dragging out of the current viewing area or across
multiple pages:)

Most of the time you want the space after, especially if you are
cutting the word(s) out, so the preference, as John suggests, is a bit
of not very good.
Me, I'd never touch the mouse (Could you see that coming Clive?)
shift-opt-right shift-left has to done, dusted and opening another can
of beer before my fingers would be halfway to the mouse.

Well, with your pointy elbows, O Mouseless One, I can imagine you could hold
down the Shift+ Option and Shift key combinations (slight bodily rolling
motion needed to go from one to the other, but that would be perfected over
time) leaving only one finger being needed for left / right arrows. And the
other nine fingers free for opening said can. Easy!

Oh golly gosh; keyboard flooded again. And I only have 9 Saratoga keyboards
left...

.... And if starting from the _right_ end of the word, Shift+Option+LeftArrow
doesn't select the *preceding* space - especially convenient for those of us
who have a tendency to do things "bass-ackwards" most of the time ;-)
