selecting text

I'm using office 97 in an xp OS. When using Word I have
trouble selecting large blocks of text that overflow into
subsequent pages. If I pull the cursor down too far while
selecting text, it automatically selects all the way to
the end of the document. I seem to have no control over
selecting smaller blocks of text that overlap more than
one page. Suggestions?

Click once to put the cursor at the beginning of the text block. Use the
scrollbars (or the mouse wheel if you have one) to bring the end of the
block onto the screen. Hold the Shift key while you click once at the end of
the block.

The hyperactive scrolling wasn't brought under control until Word 2002.
