Sending To

When I type in the name of the person I wish to send an email to, when I click on send I get a message saying the person is not recognised. The person is in my address book and if I select from there all is OK. I can very often type a name quicker than I can look it up in the adress book and I would very often prefer to just type in the name. How can I do it?
