Sentence Numbering

I need to number my sentences automatically like the example below. How do I
do this?

1 - This is the first sentence
2 - This is the second sentence
3 - This is the third sentence
4 - And so on....

The Auto format function does not work. I consulted the HELP feature and
followed the instructions but no luck.

In Word, use the numbering function remembering to return at the end of
every sentence.. the function is on the bar or under FORMAT - BULLETS AND
NUMBERING..
