I bought the student version of Office 2007. I only have webased email. I
want to set Thunderbird as default email program, since I do not own Outlook
and Windows Mail does not support Gmail. How do I do this?

Assuming you have Thunderbird installed already:

Tools/Preferences/General Tab/Tick (check) the obvious.

When I am in Thunderbird, it does show it as the default email program.
However, when I am in Excel 2007, and click on the Office Button, Send, it
does not show an email program at all. only Internet Fax. I am trying to
attach an Excel workbook to an email for a class assignment.

Firstly, do it the other way if it's urgent.
Open a new mail window in Thunderbird and click on the "Attach" button
on the toolbar.

Secondly as you are talking about Windows Mail, presumably you have Vista.
Make sure that Thunderbird is set as the default email program in
Start-Default Programs.

Try this. IE\Properties\Programs and under E-mail make sure you select Thunderbird

Yes, I am running Vista Business edition. I have already set Thunderbird as
the default progran, in Start-Default programs. Yes, I knew I could attach
the file to an email I had started in Thunderbird, but I am taking a college
software application class, and am trying to follow the steps listed in the
Office 2007 textbook in the Shelly Cashman series. Am I limited by the
Business edition? We wre able to download it free under the college license.

Thank you, Peter, but this still brought me to the same window as going from
the Start menu, and I had already set it as the default program there. Most
of the time I use Firefox as my browser. Also, when I am in Word 2007, and
try to send a doc in the same way, "Email" is faded it as an option, but
"Internet Fax" is in black. The mystery continues...

Now I am really confused. Earle, I did verify that all of my settings were
correct, per the instructions you provided, but I still receive an error in
Windows Mail. On the page below, it says in one place that Windows Mail does
not accept Gmail, but scroll down and it supports pop3. That is why I
downloaded Thunderbird. However, can't get it connected to Word/Excel???
