Setting File Associations

Alex Silberman

Hi all,

I'm running 2001 under Panther, and can't double click on a PDF attachment
to open it. I get an error that there is no application associated with the
file. I installed the Mac OS 9 version of Acrobat in the Mac Os 9 app folder
hoping to resolve this, but I still get the error. How can I manually set
associations in the classic environment?

Thanks,

Alex

I can't recall if it's possible to open the File Exchange Control Panel
while in Classic mode, but if you can you may be able to either edit the
existing PDF entry or add a PDF entry to point to your version of
Acrobat.

Something that works for a similar issue in Mac OS X may also work in
this situation but I haven't tried it. Follow these steps:

1) Select a PDF file on your computer and type Command + I to Get Info.
2) Twiddle down the Name & Extension and Open With triangles.
3) With the .pdf extension added to the end of the name, select Acrobat
as the default application. Click Change All.
4) Remove the .pdf extension and click Change All again.

This will set the default app for files that don't have resource forks
telling the Mac which app to use and also set the default app for files
with a file extension.

Hope this helps! bill

You can't access the File Exchange Control Panel from OS 10. I used to
resolve this, but booting into OS 9, setting the file associations I needed,
then booting back into OS 10. At that point, Classic would use the
associations I set in OS 9.

Now I have machines that aren't capable of booting into OS 9, so I tell my
users they have to drag the attachement from Outlook to the OS 10 desktop,
then they can open it as normal.

This is quite inconvientent, but we are not on an Active Directory Domain
(yet) therefore we are running Exchange Server 5.5...so no new Entourage for
us ;-(

Also, setting the file association in OS 10, has no effect on Outlook
running in Classic.

If anyone knows any other way to set the associations, I would be eternally
grateful, otherwise I am at a dead end.

Can you copy the File Exchange preferences file from a working Mac OS 9
system to the newer systems to get them to work? This is what I do for
networking settings such as setting the Hosts file in TCP/IP preferences.

Hope this helps! bill
