Setting Priority

Hello,
I have a custom field. What I need to do is whenever user selects an item
from the associated value list that value must somehow be used to compute the
priority for the task.

Thanks!

You will need VBA and a macro to do that for you. That is, someone keys in
values to the custom field. When the macro is run, this value is converted
to a priority value and then written into the priority property.

Alternative: Insert the Priority column instead of the custom field and be
done with it. You could educate users about the accepted values and how they
should be making their choices.

Well, I was trying to setup a convenient way of doing. I could just add the
priority column too but then priorities would be helter-skeltered all over
the place. But maybe you are right, i'll just dump in the priority column and
be done with it. I just thought that it would be nice to give a descriptive
name to priorities rather than a numerical value.

Too many cooks spoil the broth. If too many different users are entering
tasks and there's no way to enforce consistency in their assigning of
priorities, the solution is to bring the plan generation process back under
the immediate control of the manager who is actually responsible for
insuring it's completed on time and within budget and not allow anyone else
to enter tasks or set priorities without a formal management approval
process. Generally speaking I'm a believer in the idea that only the
official project manager and his staff should even have acess to the actual
mpp planning file. MSP is essentially a tool to aid the decision makers in
exploring their options, predicting the consequences of their decisions, and
they're really the only ones that need full access. Everyone else gets
read-only reports showing what they need to know.
