Shape Area and Perimeter Visio Extra

Have MS Visio 2003 SP3 (11.8161.8172). I want to measure the the area of a
shape and do not have Shape Area and Perimeter Visio Extra in Tools /
Add-Ons.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to get the capability?

Please reply.

Here is the procedure I'm trying to use:

Measure the area and perimeter of closed shapes

1.
Select the closed shape or shapes you want to measure.

On the Tools menu, point to Add-Ons, point to Visio Extras, and then click
Shape Area and Perimeter.

From the Total area and Total perimeter lists, select the units of measure
you want.
If you select multiple shapes, the Total area and Total perimeter values
reflect all the shapes combined.

With the Shape Area and Perimeter dialog box still open, resize the shapes
you are measuring, or select different shapes on the drawing page. The area
and perimeter values are updated automatically.

When you have finished, click Done.

It's quite easy to make your own, create a box, make the box border
some special type so you recognise it as your shape area tool.
Open the shape's shapesheet, create a user-defined cell section, in
the cell's Value area type the formula "=width*height".
Close the shapesheet, edit the shape's text, do menu Insert -> Field
and select the user-defined cell you just created.
That is very basic and takes no account of drawing scale etc.

It is in Visio 2007.

Thank you for your reply. Very helpful since I now see I can enter data into
a shape using a field.

It looks like I'm still missing functionality, though. I do not have a
Shapesheet option. I opened Shape / Custom Properties and entered
"=width*height" in the value field to create a field. Set Type to String.

Then I double clicked on the shape and inserted the field. No dice.

Could this be because I only have Visio 2003 and not Visio 2003
professional?

Please reply. Thank you for any information you can provide.

No, that won't work. That way only accepts numeric values, not
formulae.
