Shared borders don't upload

R

RP

Using FP2002 under XP. I have a simple site with a shared top border on all pages. I previously copied files using FTP to one location on Comcast webspace. Tonight I uploaded same files using FP2002 publish command to a different Comcast webspace. However, the shared top border doesn't show.... and I discovered that the _borders folder didn't even upload

I uploaded it via FTP, but borders still don't appear. Hmmmm??

BTW.. I'm also getting an error msg when loading FP2002 that no Office assistant files can be found, and that I need to "run Setup in maintenance mode to install an assistant.
Any idea how to do this???

You cannot use FTP and FrontPage Extensions at the same time. If, on the
server, you loded FrontPage Extensions, this allows you to use File |
Publish (then select the top options). You have many capabilities this way.
However, once you FTP, you will corrupt the Extensions that are loaded on
the server. Decide which method you want to use (FTP or w/Extension), then
do it that way each time.

If you choose FP Extensions (as most do) and you in a situation where the
only way to updated is with a 3rd party FTP Program... You must log onto the
server first and unload FP Extensions. That will prevent them from being
corrupted.

_borders may be a hidden folder...(at least is should be)..

Re the error msg, do a custom reinstall of FP from Control panel Add Remove Programs to have all run from disc

Thx for the suggestion. I've also checked the files on MY computer, and the shared border doesn't load THERE, either! So it isn't a web-based prob after all.

I've reinstalled FP2002, done a tweak to the shared border, indicated it should apply to all pages, but it hasn't made a difference. No shared border appears when I open index.html with IE on my HD.

Here are the 2 locations where the "same" files reside: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cable/ this one works fine
I intend to move the files and maintain 'em at http://home.comcast.net/~olindesigns/ This is the version without shared top border.

FYI..Another site works just fine, both on web and on my HD

I did, however, get my Office Assistant back <g>

FTPing is what does that, use File/Publish (don't use 3rd party FTP)
You may have broken the FP extensions.

On the page that doesn't work, you are missing the closing </body> and </html> tags.

Hmmmm Thx Thomas. I added the 2 tags at the end, using the
HTML:
editor in FP, saved, but top border still won't display on my computer. Haven't uploaded yet. I DID recalc the hyperlinks before saving, but we haven't nailed it yet...

Your help is very much appreciated

Validate your page at http://home.comcast.net/~olindesigns/
You open 2 tables but only close one,
that's why the page won't add the closing </body> and </html> tags and created the shared borders

Make sure that your _border/top.htm also is not missing the end tags.

I've edited, recalc'd links, and uploaded index file.

Still won't recognize the top.htm in http://home.comcast.net/~olindesigns/_borders/top.htm altho it appears OK

FP seems unwilling to populate all pages with the top border. NONE of the pages open with the top border. I've tried to fix it with specifying the shared border for all pages, but when I reopen the shared border dialogue, it's still set for "current page". It seems like this is the focus of the prob

Does the top.htm file exist in the _boarder folder (hidden) If so, do this.
1. Select to remove top boarders on all pages.
2. Close FP
3. Use Windows Explorer to save the top.htm (or whatever the name of you
border is) on your desktop.
4. Reopen FP and add a boarder to all pages. You will get a message stating
that it will create a new boarder. Go ahead and do this.
5. Close FP
6. With Windows explorer, replace the top.htm in the _boarders folder with
the top.htm you saved on your desktop.
7. Open with frontpage.... see if it is fixed.

Good Luck.

I recently ran into a problem where my top boarder (top.htm) was on a page
twice and sometimes triplicates. I was told that this was due to the server
not having the latest service pack for FontPage Extensions.

You may look into this.
Personally, I removed my top and bottom boarders (as shared boarders) and
replaced it by using the Include Component. This works very well. It is a
great substitute for shared boarders.

Note: The duplicate Shared Border Issue also applies to FP Include Pages as well.

That sucks!;
However, I hve not had problems yet. I guess the Include is bacically a
subset of the shared boarders so that would make sense. It does seem more
stable using the Include... only time will tell.

Thanks

You shouldn't have a problem as long as you and your host have installed all updates.
