Shared Document between two computers

~~Alan~~

I have created a published document on one computer, saved it on a network
server, and when I opened it on another computer, things changed such as
text blocks, spacing, colors, etc. Both computers have the same fonts
installed. The only difference is the local printer attached to each is
different.

Why such differences between the two machines?

Save to the local drive, copy to the network, Publisher isn't a happy camper on a
network. Earlier versions of Publisher were more printer dependent, but changing the
printer shouldn't change the publication.

Thank you. Can I get the same thing if I share a local folder on one
computer, save to that local folder and grab it via the network from the
other computer? Just trying to eliminate the copy step.

Someone more savvy about networks than I am will have to answer you. Might try what
you are asking, if it works then you have your solution.

If you save locally on one computer and open it across the network on the
other computer, it will still be opened across the LAN, which is what
Publisher does not like.

What version of Publisher are you using?

It sounds like my option is a portable drive of some sort, i.e. thumb drive
or portable USB HHD . Any problem with that?

BTW, can you elaborate on the problem of publisher files vs the network as
opposed to other applications vs the network, knowledge base articles maybe?
Do PageMaker or InDesign have this problem? Being an MVP, do you have any
influence with Microsoft to FIX IT?

Saving to external media is also not recommended (sorry)

The problems are not well documented.

I would direct this question at a PageMaker or InDesign newsgroup.

Microsoft claim it is fixed as of Publisher 2002. Many many users have
reported problems with these versions, though.
