Sharing Resources with Master

Hi,
I have 30 sub-projects inserted in Master project, MSP98. Everythin
working fine except resource sharing. Need expert advice.

The resources are shared in Master and not in different pool file. I
means that my master & pool is the same file.
The problem I face is that all my sub-projects have variations i
standard calendar. In some sub-projects all Saturdays are changed t
working, in some both Saturdays & Sundays are changed to working & i
some few Saturdays are changed to working & in the rest of th
sub-projects Saturdays/ Sundays are not working (standard).

Individual sub-projects when opened, the schedules look as planned a
per the changed calendars, but in Master, the calendar is discarded
standard (Sat / Sundays not working) calendar is applied to al
sub-projects & hence the sub-project finish dates are pushed.

What I am doing wrong ?
Is their a solution , alternate method ?
Help is much apprecaited, Thanks

3326ubb,
Something else must be at work here. I just tried a master file with one
inserted project using Project 98 (although I didn't have the resource
pool in the master - its a long story). I changed the working time
calendar in the subproject to have all Saturdays and Sundays as working
time. When I view the master, which has a standard calendar, the tasks
belonging to the master use the standard calendar to calculate task
dates, but the subproject uses its modified calendar to calculate task
dates. In other words, the subproject dates look the same in the master
as they do in the subproject itself.

Off hand, I can't say what may be happening. It probably has something
to do with other settings such as resource calendars. For example, if
the resources for all files are in the master, what is their calendar?
Do resource calendars track the master (i.e. standard calendar), or do
they track the subproject where the resource is used?

If you could break down your master so it only has a single subproject
and perhaps just a few tasks, I would be willing to take a look at it
and try to figure out what is going on. Just make sure that the
truncated file you do develop still shows the problem. If you want to
e-mail it to me, my address is below. But do NOT send me your full
master with all 30 subprojects. I don't have the time nor the
inclination to deal with that.

What service pack do you have installed? I think SP2 was the highest for 98.

It is safer to have a separate resource pool. Be VERY careful that no one
ever renames, over-writes or moves their projects without first removing
from the master and pool. Otherwise, file corruption will happen sooner or
later.

Rod,
Just for reference, the latest update I know of for Project 98 is SR-1.
But that's a good point, I know Project 98 did some squirrelly things
without the update.

Thanks John & Rod.
I have Project 98 - SR1, obviously SP-2 must have been loaded.

First feedback to Rod : Initially I used separate resource pool file as
is standard practise. I face the same problem, hence I did trial of
having the pool in the same master file. Same problem that the
sub-project calendar gets discarded and pool calendar (standard, Sat/
Sundays not working) is applied to all sub-projects pushing their
finish dates.
Many thanks for your tip but Yes, We do take care of re-naming,
over-writing to avoid corruption.

Second feed-back to John : I tried the way you advised, same problem. I
am sending you a master file with "2" sub-projects for your study by
e-mail.

Thanks again for positive feedback.
