Shift key problems

I've had this problem ever since I started using my PC laptop (don't have the
problem with a Mac). When I type certain letters while holding down the shift
key, strange things happen that really slow down my typing rate. I suppose
for most of these, I could just retrain myself to use the opposite shift key,
but it won't help in one instance at all. Here's what I get:

B left shift = %B
A left shift = Opens another window: Help, Reveal Formatting, etc.
N left shift = YN
Y left shift = YN
Y right shift = ^Y

This happens in both Word and in AOL. I'm using Windows XP on a Toshiba
Satellite R-15-S829 tablet PC.

Is there a way to turn off this function (I'm guessing someone thought it
would be a nice feature, but that person is wrong)? I've had a couple of
people who claim to know something about software look at it, but they could
not identify the offending setting. It's driving me nuts!

I suggest you contact Toshiba and ask what this is, and how you can disable it.
It's certainly nothing coming from Word (the subject of this newsgroup).

On the off chance this is not something installed by Toshiba, the only other
thing that occurs to me is that you've picked up an "odd" keyboard layout.
Check you Windows/Control Panel/Regional settings. The keyboard layouts are
assigned to the Languages you have activated for Windows.
