Should be able to sort Notes in One Note

J

When adding notes within a section there is no way to sort them later or have
them sort automatically. This makes it harder to keep up with notes when the
list is long.

You should be able to sort sections across the top as well. The MOVE command
is slow and clunky.

Would be best for all if you could toggle it on and off.

I, too, would like the ability to re-arrange Section tabs.

I think the option of "sorting" might be useful, too. However, there is
already a way to re-arrange pages (albeit one at a time). Search the
built-in Helpful Tips Section for "Rearrange and review notes" and you'll
find this:

"Change the order of pages To rearrange the order of pages in any
section of your notebook, point to the tab of the page that you want to move,
drag to the right, and then drag the mouse pointer to the location where you
want to move the page. The small arrow to the right of the page tabs
indicates where the page will appear when you release the mouse button."

WRT sorting pages, this is something we've been considering.

When would you choose to sort them?

Would you be fine with it working as a command, which means you replace your
custom ordering with the new sort, or, would you prefer you had a
alphabetical (or time based) view you could look at, but you couldn't reorder
your pages while in this view?

Can you tell me how it is you work, or in what scenarios, that you find
yourself needing this ability to sort pages?

Thank you very much for your input.

I'll let johnboi speak for himself. But I'll give you my 2¢ at absolutely no
charge.

Having been using OneNote for only about a month now, I don't have HUGE
compulsion to sort. However, I already have section with pages which I can't
easily find because there's no apparent order to them. When I have dozens of
pages in a section I'm sure I'll want an to re-sort them at least by alpha
just so I could find things quickly. (And I wonder whether I would want an
"advanced sort" which would allow me to create a custom order...)

I DEFINITELY WANT & NEED the ability to drag-&-drop Sections. I'll post
that separately.

How about sorting Section tabs across the top?

I'm desperate for this.

Sorting of tabs would be great, however a few provisos.

- I'd need sticky tabs, which would always appear first down the side.
Real world case of a section with more tabs than can fit on the screen.
There are always one or two I constantly update and I have these at the
top - and I would want them to stay there even after a sort.
- Ability to sort alphanumerically, by last modified date, by create
date, by viewed date. The method I choose depends on the scetion I'm
in.
- ability to sort sections not too important. Would be nice, however
must be able to drag and drop. (I always need sticky sections which
always appear first)

Lastly, and slightly off topic, I'd appreciate a tab preview screen.
This would show a mini preview of all the tabs within a section. I can
then see which tab has my picture or whatever, without going to each
one (the hold left mouse and move up and down is ok to whizz through
them but not too great when there are more tabs than will fit on the
screen).

Alex, I typically title or code pages for easy searching and I find that when
the page tabsl are alpha sorted it is easier to scan if I am not going to
search.

Thanks for asking.

Additional comment. If I could press the magic button, I would like to be
able to right click and see the option to sort by Title, or Date created or
whatever. I would like to see a sort option in the main drop down list in the
upper left corner where the list shows all files and sections. I would swear
that I did something one time to make this happen but cannot reproduce.

In general I must add that for the first version of a program this one is
very good and after using MS software for over 15 years I know they are great
for listening to user input and feedback. It is why Mr. Gates is still #1 on
the list at Forbes.

FWIW, there is the View/page List command which gives you a pane to sort
pages (in the current section, or multiple sections) by date, title, etc.
This doesn't sort the sections, and does not permanently rearrange pages.

Great.
Never noticed that !

That's very useful in leiu of sorted page tabs.

Like the ability to sort by date - means all the tabs I update daily
are like bookmarks at the top of the list.

My tuppence worth... I desperately want to sort listed items into, say,
alpha order. I want to do this with either a free-flow list (i.e. one item
per line) or within a table (e.g. the left column is the "group" I wish to be
in order). This would be much like Word or Excel so that I don't have to
keep taking my stuff out to one of those programs to rearrange then back to
OneNote.

I know ON is more a loose-leaf binder with containered items, but I need
those items to be able to be handled a bit more like a dtp program would.
Sorry!!

Visit 'OneNote PowerToys' (http://www.onenotepowertoys.com) and you
should be able to find a page sorting and section sorting add-in

I'm not sure it's safe to download from onenotepowertoys yet.
How do I know the powertoy is for OneNote 2007 ? 2003 ? There is no
direction there.
I suspect there could be some significant conflicts.

The downloads that caught my attention on the site was marked as 2007
with a (2007) note...

(downloads... was...) = (downloads... were... )

And to note, that was truly a grammar error on my part and probably
could not be rationalized away as merely a typing problem. As was
evidenced by starting this paragraph with a conjunction, and even this
sentence with an idiom.

Okay, this is too much work. If you, the reader of this maligned (from a
grammar perspective) post, can't figure out what I am trying to type
then chances are you are not alone... ;)

Hi Folks

Many, many thanks for the power toy info - fascinating and useful, but not
what I want to do (although I did download another toy from there that I can
make use of).

What I want to do is sort a list on a "page", not sort pages or sections -
maybe I will need that one day, but I keep lists of useful words for my work
and like having them alphabetized (ok, ok, so I'm a bit anal!!). To do this
I have to copy out to Word or Excel, sort then return.

Incidentally, to he%* with the grammar-police, I got what you were trying to
say and only winced a couple of times, but would never have actually picked
you up on it - now that really is anal.

That is a good feature suggestion. Presently I copy to Word, sort and
bring back, but a native sort would be handy. Seems like it could probably
be done with a PowerToy though I'm not aware of any existing toys that
already do it.

I need the ablity to sort the sections and if my OneNote keeps growing like
it is I will soon need to be able to sort the section groups as well. I
would like to sort them by alphabetically and by date last modified. I agree
it would also be a wonderful addition if it were possible to make certain
sections sticky.

A great example of a senario where the ablity to sort the sections would be
extremly useful is the OneNote Podcast "A Writer's Guide: Poetry Notes with
OneNote".

http://www.microsoft.com/products/msoffice/office/media/en-us/WritersGuidePoetryNotesOneNote.wvx

Since the author in the Podcast Uses a new section for each poem...the more
she writes the more she NEEDS to sort the sections!
