Should I create my first web page in word or publisher?

E

elvishasrisen

Hello,

I am creating a website for the first time. It is for a graduate
course, and will not actually be "uploaded" to the world wide web.

Do any of you have any advice as to which software I should use? I have

the choice of either Publisher 2003 or Word .. I am looking for ease of

use, but also want the site to be decent, as I will be graded on it.

Thanks for any help!

ps I noticed that there is no longer a wizard for creating web pages in

word .. is there one for Publisher 2003?

JoAnn,

Are there any free programs that you might recommend that are easy to
use?

Thanks!
NEITHER!!!

There is a download of the program that's replacing FrontPage. It's a beta
version so I do not recommend loading it on a system that is critical to
you.

Other than that, you can try hand-coding HTML. If you're running Windows,
you have Notepad.

Question: What are you being graded on? Content, design, ability to add
crappy music and swirly mousetails?

JoAnn is referring to Expression Web Beta 1. You can find a link to
downloading it on my Office 2007 B2TR page.
I strongly agree with her: Don't use Word or Publisher.

Thank you - I couldn't remember the name of that program. I'm a FrontPage
user and will be for a while yet.

I don't have much experience with Web Page design and what
little I have done used a copy of FrontPage older than my
version of Office (2002). It was fairly easy to use. I seem to
remember doing a few quick and dirty changes with Notepad.

I've used Open Office Writer, for me it seems to work MUCH better than Word
does and seemed more intuitive. As always, YMMV!

OpenOffice is available free from www.openoffice.org

I suppose you might try to find a copy of Word 2002, which does
have the wizard but I'll say quite firmly that is much inferior
to Front Page. I tried it before hunting out my copy of Front
Page.

I think you meant to reply to elvishasrisen.

I have several early versions of Office as well as Office 97, Office
2000, Office 2002 (XP), Office 2003 and Office 2007 as well as Front
Page for each version of Office, I still prefer OpenOffice for creating
web pages, probably because I'm more used to it and creating web pages
is something I do so rarely that I'll probably never get very good at
it?

Publisher and Word are OK if you want to make existing
documents/publications available on the web as html. Like other
respondents, I wouldn't use any of them to make a web page from scratch.

If you are going to expand your page to a full site, the web editor
functionality in Front Page is useful for maintaining links and overall
style. Don't use too much of the fancy stuff, though, as some of the
effects look good only in Internet Explorer on Windows. Using a
different browser or OS, your page may look messy and some content may
be missing (though it's been a while since I last used FP, so it may
have improved).

For creating a site with a few web pages I find nvu has the features I
need. Another advantage is the low price (0). See http://www.nvu.com

Open Office is, like MS Office, an office suite and not a web editor
package. That said, my experience is that OO writer gives more
predictable results than Word.

If size (~bandwidth) is an issue (which it normally is for web pages),
by all means use a proper web editor (like nvu) and "webify" all images.
For an endeavour towards the other end of the scale, try making a web
page with Powerpoint. (For laughs, not for publishing.)
