Should I upgrade Office 2000 basic to Office 2003 standard

I have office 2000 on my P4 Desktop and Office 2003 on a newer laptop used
only when I travel. My major issue: in the past I have copied Outlook pst
files back and forth between the two machines, but copying Office 2003 files
to Office 2000 causes problems. Is there a workaround for this?
If I need to upgrade, what is the least expensive way to do it?

Using the same office version between machines is usually the best
"workaround".
