Show for ... Tasks Value Error

N

Neill

I'm using MSP 2003. The problem is that when I choose certain values for the
Show for ... Tasks, I get an error dialog box saying

This value is not valid in this situation.

Check the field to see if it requires text, a date, or a number, and that
you typed the information correctly.

Other fields I try to use are Rollup, Group by Summary and others but they
are always rejected with the above message. If the field value is already
there, say by itself or with other values, then it keeps it there without an
error box even though I choose the field value box and then choose another
one. This is true for just about all of my views using different Bar Styles.
Anyone seen or had this bizzar error box and if so is there a remedy? I've
uninstalled the software and reinstalled it, started off with a virgin
global.mpt file and still the same error!

HELP!!

Neill,
It sounds like the data fields you have in the "From" and "To" columns
are not compatible with the "show for..." item you are trying to use.
Without actually seeing your file or a more complete explanation of what
you are trying to accomplish, it is a little difficult to say exactly
what is happening. Can you be a little more specific as to what is in
each of the columns of the Bar Styles user interface that don't seem to
work?

John,
I wish there was a way I could insert a jpg file of the screenshot or a pdf
of same here on this forum, but not aware how to do that. So until I can do
that or send you a zip of the file, I guess that's out.

Here's how the Bar Styles columns look:

Name Appearance Show for... Tasks Row From To

Milestone Diamond Milestone, Not Started 1 Start
Start

Rollup Bar Rollup, Summary 1 Start
Finish

Group Bar Group by Summary 1 Start
Finish

If you know of a way I can send you some project files or even the screen
shot, please let me know. Thanks!

Neill,
Posting files or graphics to the newsgroup is frowned upon so I'm glad
you didn't figure out how to do it.

From your data I don't see anything obviously wrong with your approach.
I you want to send me the zipped file via e-mail, use the address below.
Be sure to include a complete explanation of what you are trying to do.
I'm pretty busy at the moment, so I may not get a chance to look at it
for a few days.

John,

Well I finally figured out what was happening here with my error I was
getting (see below). It turns out I was using a " " (space) for my Windows
separator value. Once I changed it back to a "," (comma), it accepted the
values I placed in Show for...Tasks.

Neill,
Thanks for the update. I'll try to remember that little item in case
someone else has a similar problem in the future.
