Slide formats/backgrounds

When importing slides from another file, is there a way to prevent the slides
from converting to the format and style of the existing presentation?

It depends - which version of PowerPoint do you have? The multiple masters
functionality was added with PPT 2002. If you are using an earlier version,
you will need to fake it.
