The slide transition shows when you click on the play button within the task
pane, but when you actually view your show, it is white versus black. In
other words the checkerboards are black on white in task pane, but during
show are white on white.

If you are using Chequer across the "color" used is actually the slide
contents. I guess your slides are mainly white. If you want to see how it
works try making a short presentation with each blank slide a different color
and give them all that transition.
