emoticons are not part of the Office suite. But you can use "Insert,
Symbol, Symbols, Subset: Miscellaneous Dingbats

Look under Tools, Autocorrect options. You can add or delete them there.

I have a bunch of emoticons which came with Windows or Office. I have never
created them any other way.

If I type this character string into MS Word 2003.. :) .. it puts up a
smiley face on screen.. I have not made any changes to allow this, so I
guess it must be a default in the 2003 version..

The smileys are AutoCorrect entries. Take a look under
Tools/AutoCorrect and verify "Replace text as you type" is turned on.
If it is then check the list and verify the smileys are in the list -
they should be near the top.

If they aren't there then you can recreate them. However I suspect
they weren't necessarily deleted but they were removed after you
created a new Normal.dot by saving a Word document/template as
Normal.dot. Since smileys are symbols they are stored as Rich Text
AutoCorrect entries which are stored in your Normal.dot rather than an
*.acl file which is where your plain text AutoCorrect entries are
stored.

In this case you are also probably missing your AutoText entries as
well. These are found under Insert/AutoText/AutoText. If that's the
case then I suggest you create a new Normal.dot by renaming your old
one and allowing Word to generate a new one. Only Word can create a
'true' Normal.dot.

I was of the belief that the OP was refering to those "emoticon images"
you find in the "Web browser e-mail". As in the "pretty colored "7-up"
dot characters".
