Soften edges on graphics/photos

Is there a way to soften the edges (smudge, blur, etc.) objects in
PowerPoint? For example, I drew an oval using the oval tool, filled it with a
picture, and now would like to soften the edges so it would not look so harsh
in my presentation. Is there a way to do this?
