Some cannot open Project file from IE link

Hello! I have a link that is meant to open a MS Project file. Some people
have no problem getting to the file via the link, and others get a "the page
cannot be found" error, even though they have Project on their PCs. Is this a
setting on each PC that must be changed?

Thank you!

Hi Captain59,

I assume the Project file is stored on a network drive that all users have
access to? Could it be a permissions issue on the file server?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your reply. The file is on the web server I use with FrontPage.
There are also Word documents and Excel spreadsheets there that these people
can access, but they cannot access the Project file that's in the same
folder, so I don't think it's a permissions issue. I'm really stumped!

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

You're welcome.

I know very little about webservers but must say that is a puzzler. I
assume the URL you are using for all files is the full path
(\\servername\directory etc) not a mapped drive?

Can the users open the file from project by navigating to the file on the
server? What happens if the users try to open the file using Windows
Explorer?
Off the top of my head, I can't think of any setting within Project which
restricts which file that can be opened other than old versions (98) cannot
open files created in later versions (2000+)

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

The file is on a web server that only I have access. Users cannot directly
access the files...only use the URL. When they try to right-click the link to
try and save the file directly, they get an, "Internet Explorer was not able
to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or
cannot be found. Please try again later" error...which makes no sense because
they would not be able to be on that page if the site was not available.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

So it sounds as though MS Project isn't even starting and attempting to open
the file, rather it is IE that is pitching the error.

I have to admit I'm stumped. I don't know if anyone else from this
newsgroup has any ideas or perhaps if you post to a newsgroup for IE or
FrontPage that they may have some insights.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
