SORTING ALPHA-NUMERICALLY

I HAVE A PLOBLEM SORTING A STREET LIST. I HAVE IT IN A TABLE AS COLUMN 1. CO RD 3434 SORTS BEFORE CO RD 402. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

Nothing. Word sorts alphabetically from left to right, so CO RD 3 comes
before CO RD 4, even though there are more characters after the 3. You
should be able to import your Word data into Excel, parse it, and then
sort it there... Excel can sort numerically.

Word can sort numerically also. Set the number option in the type drop down
in the sort dialog.

This will put
CO RD 402
before
CO RD 3434

Carl.

Will that really work if the field contains the preceding letters? I tried
doing it myself (with cells formated as NUMBER) and I can't get it to work.
Or are you assuming the road-type designation will be in a seperate field
from the road number?

Yes, I was assuming you would parse the number into a separate column in
Excel. But see Graham Mayor's reply to your post for another idea too.
