sound files won't play in Powerpoint

I have checked previous posts and based on the answers, I started setting up
my presentation with sound files and it was actually working fine but it is
suddenly not working (perhaps due to size?). I have a 2003 PPT of 64MB
(pictures), 2 .WAV files at 26 MB each, 7 windows media audio files up to 4
MB each. I have inserted all sound files to various slides, everything was
playing fine (on my machine) until the last song, now nothing plays. I will
need to create a cd of the show to use in a presentation (using a laptop).
Should I only be using .WAV files? These were getting so large, I was afraid
the whole folder wouldn't fit on a cd!

Did you start with the files in the same folder as the presentation?

Only Wav files or mp3 files with a riff wav header can be embedded in the
presentation. To do this change the value in
Tools>Options>General "link sounds with file size greater than" to 50000
NB this isnt retrospective you will have to insert again.

To add a riff wav header to mp3 files download Cdex and use Convert > "add
riff wav header to mp2 /3"
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos

Yes I added all music files to the same folder before inserting. Something
must have happened to the link as I deleted the file, reinserted and it
worked ok. On this post as well as others, the recommendation seems to be
only use .wav music files (or wav like by using conversion programs) before
inserting to ensure the music is embedded but is this absolutely necessary?
If music files such as windows media format are in the same folder before
inserting to PPT and the whole folder is burned on the CD, what are chances
the show will run ok?
