splitting effort / work on a task

Hi,

I have an 90 project portfolio to plan.

I have created some standard effort estimates for tasks which are common to
these projects. for 4 different durations of projects.

I have added the work to MSP via the task usage view so that the work is
distributed across the weeks for the duration of the project. [ with
different start and end dates ]

there are no resources allocated to this work at this time. Is there a quick
way to split the total work on a task between 3 resources [ say in percentage
terms ] without having to manually enter the work for each task in the
resource usage view.

ie I am hoping to

have 200 hours of total effort split between 3 resources

thanks

Paul

Make the tasks fixed work, click the assign resources button. YOu can adjust
assignment percentages in that form.
Work duration may collapse depending on the number of resources assigned and
their percentage. Assigning "Harry" to a task at 50% means Harry works 50%
of Harry's availability, not 50% of the work.

Hi Jim,

thanks for the reply, the tasks are already fixed work,

Assigning a % of a resources availability does not help me to split effort
required by several resources to complete a single repeated task -

Is there a column,view/ sheet where I can effect the spliting of effort for
standard tasks between different resources?

Also, as a number of the task are repeated across the portfolio, it is
difficult to identify which project they belong to, so that I can assign
resources to these. I created a text field column in the task usage sheet and
enter the project names into all the cells, but when I added this to the
resource usage sheet the column is not populated. Can you help ?

Hi Paul,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Project will not assign resources for you - how would it know what
percentage to assign to each one? That's your job!

As for the project names, you will need to create the same column in the
Resource assignment view as all three views are different - please see FAQ
Item: 37 - Custom Fields in Tables. FAQs, companion products and other
useful Project information can be seen at this web
address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
