Sporadic Inability to use Pen in OneNote

Hello, I'm using OneNote 2003 (11.6554.6568) SP2 on a Toshiba Satellite
R15 Tablet PC that is running Win XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, v 2002,
SP2.

I have had a problem using OneNote since I officially purchased it
about 9 months ago (my Tablet PC came with only the trial version
installed), and as a consequence, have not used it much or had reason
to rave about it as much as I see others.

On sporadic occasions, when I attempt to use my Tablet PC's pen to make
notes in OneNote, the OneNote program refuses to switch out of the
"Type/Selection Tool" mode.

When this problem is happening, I try to tap on the pen buttons in the
"Pens" toolbar, and/or the various "create" buttons on the "Drawing
and Writing Tools" toolbar, but the "Type/Selection Tool" refuses to
give up its hold on the cursor. In fact, on a few occasions, it looks
like the pen tool appears, but for only a split second before the
"Type/Selection Tool" takes precedence again. During this time the
various "create" buttons on the "Drawing and Writing Tools" toolbar are
all greyed out.

As I mentioned, this problem is sporadic, and I have not been able to
figure out if there is a pattern to these occurrences. (It does sadly
seem to happen more often when I'm showing off my Tablet PC to someone,
though!)

For instance, it happened last night, while on battery power, with
Outlook and Adobe Acrobat Pro open in the background. The laptop had
been in Standby mode and sitting in a warm car for a good part of the
day. After tapping around on various buttons, and trying to see if
there are any settings in the Tools/Options area that might signify a
confilict, I shut down and re-started OneNote several times with no
success. I even re-booted the Tablet PC. Finally, I shut down the
whole laptop for a half hour. When I booted up after the half-hour
rest, there was no longer a problem.

I haven't noticed any other postings regarding a problem resembling
this one, although I do see that the topic named "How to select
Selection Cursor from Pen Cursor" does seem to be the reverse of my
problem. (Although my computer's not trying to install Messenger.)

Any ideas on a cause or solution to the problem? It would be nice to
actually be able to depend on OneNote, because it does have so much
promise!

The only thing I can think of is that this might be related to OneNote
auto-switching into typing mode if it detects keyboard usage. If for some
reason the keyboard mistakenly registers keystrokes when there are none, this
would happen.

One thing you might try is to turn off auto-switching. In 2003, I believe it
is in Tools > Options under "Pen" or "Handwriting".
If you turn auto-switching off, you will need to use the toolbar buttons to
switch between modes.

Hope this helps,
