StartUp task pane Office 2003

In Word 2003, I've unchecked the startup task pane option (tools ->
options -> view -> Startup Task Pane), but each time i open Word 2003,
the startup task pane aways shows up - though the box remains unchecked
.... i can close it for each session (view -> Task Pane, but the next
time i open word 2003 the task pane is back. This also happens
sometimes in Excel (but sometimes not), but powerpoint is fine.

What can i do to have the task panes start up when i want them? My IT
guy is stumped. Thanks

Hi Fred,

In your user profile can you write changes to the
registry or are any system policies for Office 2003 set?

If not the startup taskpane registry key of
"Startup dialog" should have a value of zero in
For Word 2003
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options
and For Excel 2003
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options

Should turn off the default Taskpane on startup.

You may also have an addin that may be loading it
as well. See if you get the same behavior starting
each app in Office safe mode (hold ctrl key when starting
the app).

Thanks Bob, the registry change seems to work for Excel, but still
having issues in Word ... the registry entry is '0' but the task pane is
still there. In task pane doesn't start up in safe mode for either Word
or Excel ... so my guess is this is a computer specific problem.

thanks for your help

Hi fred, I've got the same problem, only in word this annoying problem appears indeed.
Have you found a solution yet?

Please mail me if so...

Fred, 5 minutes after my 1 message I found a solution: go to registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General\DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane

The value of the entry should be set to 0
