Stolen photos

In the past, at certain sites, such as yahoo auctions, I have tried to right
click and "save as" on a photo. When i do this an error message will pop up
saying that I do not have authorization to do this. How can i set my photos
to give that error message? That is how the thieves are stealing my photos,
they save them to their documents and then rename them.

The content (HTML, images, scripts.. ) you send to a client browser is
cached at client. No matter how you script your pages if someone wants
to get your images they will get it one way or another. For those who
do not know how to save other than right mouse click:
<body oncontextmenu="return alert('Not from my site buddy!');">

Cheers.

for those who do not know how to save other than right mouse click.

But images can be gathered from browser cache...

Cheers.

Where do i insert this code? I tried inserting it after one of the photos and
it messed up the whole page.

Don't bother - the code is blocked by default in IE7, FireFox, Opera 8
and Netscape 8.
And it is too easy to get round in any browser - use View->Source to
see where the images are located, or File->Save As to save the whole
page, CSS, JavaScript, images etc. to your desktop.
You cannot stop people saving your images.

Thank you for the extra information. That is a bummer. But, I did it anyways,
it should at least slow it down, not everyone knows how to get around things.
I didn't until you just told me!! LOL

The fact that one is not aware of something does not mean that it is not
common knowledge.

Here's some more common knowledge for you: If you use this sort of tactic,
it gives your site an "amateur" reputation, irritates people, drives traffic
away from your web site, and causes problems for people that have their
mouse buttons switched due to being left-handed.

I use this one:

<script language="Javascript1.2">
message = "My photos f off!";

function NoRightClick(b) {
if(((navigator.appName=="Microsoft Internet Explorer")&&
(event.button > 1))
||((navigator.appName=="Netscape")&&(b.which > 1))){
alert(message);
return false;
}
}
document.onmousedown = NoRightClick;

// -->
</script>

I put it after the </html>

as many others have said its not fool proof but water marking all your
images can be a tool also.

Not fool proof? I'm not so sure. Many fools have used it.

Then people have to open them in a graphics program and remove the
watermark! Thats extremely easy.

How do you do this? Editing the picture manually? A filter?
Which program do you use to do this?

Some are.

If the visible ones are applied ineffectively they're easy to remove with
PS. Years ago I was able to remove Digimarc ones as well...dunno if they've
changed any. Anyone have a Digimarc'd one I can play with ? :)

| Beats me. I have never seen even a simple one that would be called "easy
to

I suppose it depends how its done. if its just type across the picture
added after the fact, its simple to remove. I could get pretty decent
results with just microsoft paint in that case. The harder stuff is the
shaded or embossed watermark which requires more time and a good graphics
program. Of course I havn't done it in years so maybe theres new tech that
makes it harder to do?
