Style will not "apply"

C

Christine

I am using Word 2000. Occasionally, when trying to apply a
style (custom or otherwise) to a word or paragraph, the
style will not "stick", but retains the "normal" style.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what can be
done to fix the problem?

Thank you!

Christine

How are you applying the style? Applying a paragraph style to selected text
is not generally a good idea. I don't think it will stick in Word 2000, in
Word 2002+ it may create a new char style.

If you click inside of a paragraph without selecting text and apply a
paragraph style that should apply it to the entire paragraph.

I have tried applying it to just the word(s) as well as to
the entire line (including the paragraph mark). Same
result. Sometimes, the formatting will change, but
the "style box" reflects the name of the original style -
and I need the style in order to create a TOC.

I think I have occasionally found that applying a style via the drop-down
menu on my toolbar fails to take. In that case, I usually try applying the
style via the Format | Style menu, and for some reason this works better.
(Find and Replace is a third way to apply a style, fyi)

If you turn the Style Width view on in Normal view (enter a number under
Tools | Options, View tab), double-clicking the style name shown in the
margin should be a quick way to access the Format | Style dialog.

Again, if you want the style to apply to the paragraph it is important that
you _not_ select any text. If the insertion point is inside the paragraph
and you change the style in the style box the new style will apply to the
entire paragraph.

As pointed out by Charles and Dayo, paragraph styles should be
applied either with nothing selected, or with the entire
paragraph, including the paragraph mark, selected. However, there
is yet another thing to consider here: Are you using character
styles as well as paragraph styles? (In the Style box, character
styles are identified with the letter "a" underlined, and
paragraph styles are identified with the paragraph symbol [¶].)

A character style overrides the formatting of the underlying
paragraph style, and the Style box displays the character style
name. Does pressing CTRL+SPACEBAR (which removes direct font
formatting, including character styles) make a difference?

Yes...I considered those points. I rarely, if ever use
the character styles - the one that I attempted to apply
was a paragraph style. I began by clicking within the
word - nothing happened - the style maintained
the "normal" style. I then tried selecting the entire
word, then the entire paragraph, including the paragraph
mark - with the same resule. Today, after the PC had been
restarted, I am not suffering from the same
problem....styles are sticking as they should. I guess if
I see this problem again, a good old reboot is in order.

Thank you all for your time and input!! :)
Have a wonderful day.

Word, at least, should be restarted every day. It takes its date from the
time it is started.

I just tested this in Word 2002, and it gets the correct date even if
left on overnight.

Can you suggest any test that will show different results?

Nope, last time I experienced this was with Word 2000 several years ago.
Since then, I've shut Word down when I leave my computer.

I'm having similar troubles and it's driving me nuts. I
started out adapting existing Word styles so I could have
outline numbering. However, it appears that I have to
choose between the number I want my paragraphs to be or
the correct formatting.

I can set my tabs and hanging indents in the style. So I
get to 4.2.3.1 with no trouble. However, I don't want the
first bullet under it to be the k) picked up after j) from
the 3.1.3.1. If I manually select to restart numbering, I
lose my formatting. I have tried to remove the formatting
from the style, but it always pops back to the tabs and
location I had gotten rid of. Yes, I've turned off the
autocorrecting too.

Somebody help me before I'm bald from tearing out my hair.
Is there a fix or did I transfer a computer bug
unknowingly? Do I need to just scrap this document and
rebuild from the ground up?

Thank you in Advance,
Arlene Stewart
