Tab won't work

I'm trying to set a tab in a table. I assume that the instructions are the
same for tables as they are for text (?) I highlighted the cells and clicked
the "L" icon in the ruler to place the tab. The proper icon was placed in
the bar as it should be. The problem is that when I hit the tab key the
cursor just goes to the next line in the preceding cell. I tried it several
times. Can someone tell me why it does not work?

Because the tab key is used in tables for the Next Cell function, you have
to use Ctrl+Tab to insert a tab character there.
