table of content not longer works but hyperlink works

I am using ms word 2003. (11.8106.8107) sp2. The user created a word
document called TOB1.doc

TOB1.doc has a table of content in 1st page.
- when I click on table of content area, it opens another window exploerer
and point to the directory. (as specified in the property of the doc -
hyperlink directory )
- when I click on the hyperlink in page 2 of TOB1.doc, it opens up the
correct document e.g. DOC2.doc
- I remove all the setting in the hyperlink directory setting...now the
table of content link works but all the hyperlink will not work.
- The user has an impression that this problem is caused by patch
installation.
Question:
Any one know if this hyperlink, table of content problem is caused by a
particular ms patch?
or
any trick to make the table of content link and hyperlink works at the same
time?
