Table of contents questions

I have completed my phd thesis a fairly large document and have used the
automatic heading styles 1 to 4. I've modified them slightly but no worries
there. I'm using word 2007 if this helps.

On constructing an automatic table of contents some of my page numbers have
not been aligned to the right hand side and appear at the end of the
headiung. Only about 8 out of over a hundred headings have done this and they
don't correspond to 1 heading type in particular. I'm just wondering if there
is anything i can do to align them other than manually tabbing them across.
Obviously this works but if i update the table they will revert.

Secondly i want to add entries in the TOC for headings i have in my pre
pages numbered i, ii, iii etc. I would like these headings not to be
numbered. I'm not totally clear how i do this as i've used numbered heading
styles in the main text. I want to include the contents headig from TOC, List
of Figures and entries i've typed e.g acknowlegments, preface.

Any help much appreciated

The misaligned page numbers usually mean that your titles (entries in
the ToC) are long enough that there isn't room for the tab at the
right edge to kick in. A way to fix this is to set the right margin
indent of each of the ToC styles (not the styles of the headings
themselves) so that the right-tab is _beyond_ (to the right of) the
right margin stop. Then the longer titles will break onto a new line
and the page numbers will align properly (so will the dot leaders, if
you've used them). (You'll probably want to use a Hanging Indent too
so that your carry-overs are clear.)

Are you saying that the headings of front matter categories have
numbers, and you don't want them to? Then set up another Heading Style
for them, with a different name, without numbering, and mark it to be
included in the ToC.

The usual reason for this is a tab stop in the wrong place. This can happen
if the headings are quite short or if the numbers of numbered headings are
too long. Or it could just be random: does the situation straighten itself
out if you select the offending TOC entry and press Ctrl+Q? In any case,
look for any tab stops in the TOC style that might cause the problem.

Also, note that if any of the headings are quite long, it's a good idea to
apply a right indent to the TOC style (leaving the tab stop for the page
number where it is) so that the heading text will wrap well short of the
page number.

Thanks Peter I shall try out your suggestions.

As for the front matter stuff. As yet they are unnumbered in fact they are
still normal text in some cases. I wish them to remain unnumbered but added
to the TOC.

Thanks

Hi Suzanne
I just tried the ctrl Q thing. Page number moved over ok but then the
heading text moved left and now there is no space between heading number and
heading text.

This is happening on long headings i.e. ones that move on to a second line
in the TOC but not in all cases. There are longer ones whch work fine. It
seems quite random!

I'll try out the tab stop stuff but i'm a bit of a word dummy. I'll give it
a go i think i have an idea of what you mean

I'm rather confused

Many thanks to you both great help!

Obviously you can't just add "Normal" to the styles included in the
ToC, so you'll need to assign a Style to the front matter headings,
and then include it in the ToC. It shouldn't invent numbers on its
own!
