takes an age to open a DOC.

Hello

I am using Word 2002; my OS is Win XP SP3.

Word opens relatively quickly however whenever I try to open an existing
document it can take nearly a minute to actually open the document.
Sometimes it doesn't even open the document and I get a "proram not
responding" message

If I try to open a document from Explorer it also takes that long.

Any ideas please?

From what template were these documents created? Is it possible that Word
could be looking for a template on a network location that no longer exists?

I've no idea, Stefan. My hard disk is partitioned my OS is on "C" my
templates & documents on another drive. However in Tools/Options/File
Locations that drive is selected. It's been thus for years and only in the
last few months has the problem arisen. I've lived with it but it is
frustrating.

Before I bought this computer I had and older version of Office (SBE 97 in
which many of the documents would have been created and the version I now
use came with Works Suite 2006.

In a problem document, if you click Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, which is
the path to the template?

Also it says nothing under full path.

"Normal" without a path means the Normal template in the default location
(the user templates folder as defined in the File Locations dialog box), so
that doesn't offer an explanation.

If you start Word in Safe mode (as a troubleshooting step), does that make a
difference? To start in Safe mode, hold the Ctrl key as you start
application; when Word asks about Safe mode, click Yes. See what happens
when you open documents.

OK, the fact that Safe mode improved the situation, suggests the problem
might be with an add-in. See the steps to troubleshoot template *and* COM
add-ins detailed in the KB article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259413/en-us/ (How to troubleshoot problems
that may occur when you start or work in Word 2000, in Word 2002, and in
Word 2003).

Please let us know how this works out for you. Note that reinstalling
usually does not fix any issues, because customized files (and registry
entries) will be retained even after a reinstallation.

Thanks for the advice

I tried following the instructions to Repair Word however I managed to
uninstall it. I've now reinstalled it & will see how I get on. If the
problem persists I'll try another of the remedies in the article.

Will do. I'll work my way through the fixes in the article & report which
one worked. atm the only one I have tried is using the /a switch & this
opens word & documents faultlessly
