task and subtask finish dates

When I enter subtasks for a task, or change subtask finish dates, it seems to
me that the finish date for the task should be set to equal to the greatest
finish date for the task's subtasks. But that doesn't happen. In fact, the
only way I can change the finish date for an existing task is to outdent all
it's subtasks until they are no longer subtasks, change the date, then
reindent the subtasks. Why? Any ideas?
