Tasks do not get split

I'm running Project 2003 SP2. I have a project which was created from scratch
with this version. I want to interrupt some task that have been started but
aren't currently being worked in to assign the start dates for the next
sections.

When I try to use 'Split tasks' it offers the split cursor (|->) but when I
move a section, it just moves the end date and doesn't split the task. I've
check the obvious (setting on Format/Layout). What else could be preventing a
task being split.

Of course, what I'd really like is to just be able to type the task split
dates in a table as part of the task information rather than dragging, but
that would presumably need a new versio. (unless someone's written an addin?).

Hi DWD,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I don't know why it's not splitting. However, you could insert the Stop and
Resume columns and select the dates there. Or for more control, us the Task
Usage view and enter zeros in the timescaled data to force the split.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Shortly after posting I came across a reference to the STOP & RESUME columns
which do split the tasks when values are entered. However, they do no appear
to give fine control and Project still does some strange things.

The workaround I've found is to enter the percentage complete. Then enter
the START date, with the STOP and RESUME columns displayed. Project will then
assign all the completed time to be between START & STOP and adjust RESUME so
that FINISH remains the same.

Of course, I haven't figured out what to do for 3 or more splits yet.

DWD.
