teacher student occasionally makes documents read only. Why?

We have word professional and my wife and kids have word from the teachers
and students version. Occasionally many documents seem to become read only
in the teachers student version, which of course makes them difficult to work
with.

What is the cause of this problem with the Teachers student versions of
office word and read only documents?

My understanding is that the only difference with the Pro version and the
academic version is the price. What version are they? 2000/XP/2003? If one
is a difference version to the other that would cause some incompatibility.
Also check if the same features are installed. If one has WordArt and the
other does not have WordArt installed (Example only), it would also cause
compatibility issues

Are you using CDs to save the files, ever? Often that will cause the
read-only setting.
