Is there a way in powerpoint to add an additional text box in the master
slide layout so that you don't contianlly have to add a new text box a each
new slide you create

go to master slide, choose a text box hold ctrl, drag the text box,
you will get a copy, then place it and resize it as you want, it will
appear on each new slide you create.

You can't add placeholders to slide masters in PPT 2003 and earlier. You can
in 2007.
