Text borders on one side only

I am trying to format a selection of text (not a whole paragraph) with
a line OVER the text i.e. like underscore except that the line in on
the top of the text.

How can I do this in Word 2003?

I have tried Format/Borders amd Shading and "Apply To" to "Text" but
that only allow me to put a complete box around the selected text,
not, as with paragraphs, on any side I like.
