text gets overwritten, why?

text gets overwritten when something new is typed before the sentence, how do
i get this fixed,am working on a 5000 word write up and this is driving me
crazy. pls help thanks !

Do any one of these:
- Press the Insert key.
- Double-click the letters OVR on the status bar.
- Open the Tools > Options dialog, click the Edit tab, and uncheck the
"overtype mode" box.
